The founding board of NeighborHealth was formed to address the growing number of people in Wake County without access to healthcare. The board assessed existing healthcare resources and identified gaps; met with residents, healthcare providers, community and government organizations; and connected with successful faith-based health centers throughout the country.
We determined that NeighborHealth could launch a new faith-based practice and uniquely serve an area of high need where no safety-net clinic currently exists. We are striving to meet the overwhelming need for quality healthcare to our most vulnerable neighbors. Learn more about the services we provide here.
NeighborHealth Center opened its doors in 2018—inspired by the vision of Susanne Berger, a loving Christian and registered nurse who had spent decades caring for others. When Susanne was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, she was inspired to make a difference in the lives of those who didn’t have the resources or knowledge to advocate for their own health. The idea for NeighborHealth was born, but establishing a medical clinic that would care for all patients regardless of their ability to pay was no easy feat.
Once in remission, Susanne brought together an incredible, passionate team who spent several years working together to make the NeighborHealth dream a reality. While Susanne’s cancer returned just before the first clinic opened, she persevered through more months of treatment and had the joy of witnessing NeighborHealth serve thousands of patients before she lost her battle in 2021. Her vision continues to inspire the future growth of NeighborHealth, and our Blue Ridge Road clinic is named in honor of her vision and work.
