Loving Our Neighbors – Mbiya

Because of support from generous contributors like you, NeighborHealth provides access to life-saving primary care services for our most vulnerable neighbors from near and far.
Originally from Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Mbiya came to NeighborHealth in 2021 after years of struggling with chronic disease. Without insurance, his options for care were limited, and his health was rapidly deteriorating. Fortunately, NeighborHealth welcomed Mbiya with open arms, and within months, his blood pressure and diabetes were under control for the first time in years.
But the NeighborHealth team didn’t stop there. Fortunately for Mbiya, his provider was paying attention and noticed an iron deficiency—which can be an early sign of colon cancer. Like many people, Mbiya insisted he was fine and didn’t need additional testing, but his care team insisted he look into it. NeighborHealth helped Mbiya qualify for a free colon cancer screening, and when the results came back positive, they referred him for testing that revealed a scary diagnosis: Stage 3 colon cancer.
At every step, NeighborHealth supported Mbiya’s treatment journey. From coordinating referrals and helping him qualify for financial assistance to supporting him through surgery and chemotherapy, the NeighborHealth team has walked alongside Mbiya and his family throughout this challenging time. This spring, Mbiya is finishing up his treatment and looking forward to living a long and healthy life with his wife and son, who are also NeighborHealth patients.

“When I think about my diagnosis, I know I almost missed it. But, NeighborHealth cared enough to take a closer look, and it may have saved my life. I don’t think I’d be here today if it weren’t for the care I’ve received and I’m so grateful. It’s so comforting to know that NeighborHealth is always here for my family.” —Mbiya
This story is just one of many showcasing what makes NeighborHealth truly unique. Regardless of income, background, or life circumstance—every NeighborHealth patient receives the same exceptional care. In fact, more than 75% of our patients are either uninsured or rely on government-sponsored plans like Medicaid and Medicare. Last year alone, NeighborHealth provided more than $1.8 million in unreimbursed care to uninsured patients in Wake County.
This critical work is our mission, but we cannot do it without your support. As Wake County continues to grow, so do the needs of our neighbors. Continued support is even more critical now. In the coming year, NeighborHealth expects to welcome approximately 1,300 new patients who deserve the Christ-centered care we provide to every patient who walks through our doors.
Please consider making a gift today. Every donation we receive makes a huge difference in the lives of patients like Mbiya.

P.S. Just as this letter was going to be published, we learned that Mbiya’s cancer is in remission! Upon receiving the news, Mbiya came straight to NeighborHealth to share the news, and we’re all celebrating alongside him and his family. God is good!!
