Neighbor News: November 2024

Thank you, Hayes Barton United Methodist Church!
We are so grateful for our faith partner, Hayes Barton UMC, which recently hosted a book drive to bless the pediatric patients of NeighborHealth with books to read in the waiting room and to take home from their appointments. As part of our whole-person approach to care, we prioritize literacy initiatives in our pediatric department, and we need lots of books! Thanks for helping make this effort possible, HBUMC!

Healthcare Corner: Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetes Awareness Month takes place in November in honor of the Nov. 14 birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin in 1921. It’s estimated that 1 out of 10 Americans have diabetes, and many people don’t even know it. More than 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes, which occurs when blood sugar is elevated, but not high enough to have diabetes. Prediabetes is a red flag to make changes to avoid the road to diabetes.
Betsy Joyner, PA-C, Director of Clinical Services, has extensive training in diabetes care and shares a passion for prevention and education. Betsy and other providers spend time during appointments educating patients about the health risks of conditions like diabetes and discussing preventative measures.
Did you know? Diabetes education and prevention is a key metric tracked by the NeighborHealth team. Our providers work closely with our patients to identify, treat, and manage diabetes so that they can live full, healthy lives.
Staff Happenings: An International Thanksgiving Potluck
This month, the NeighborHealth team gathered to celebrate the Thanksgiving season with good food and fellowship together. Many of our staff members brought delicious contributions—family favorites, traditional cultural dishes, and classic Thanksgiving recipes. The entire feast was tasty, but some favorites included corn pudding, homemade stuffing, and Swedish ginger cookies!

Save the Date: Giving Tuesday is on December 3!
Giving Tuesday unleashes the power of radical generosity. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity every year.
It’s a simple idea: every act of generosity matters, no matter how small. It could be making someone smile, helping a neighbor, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help. Everyone can contribute to building a better world.
NeighborHealth Center will feature a special, online-only giving campaign on Tuesday, December 3 to join the global Giving Tuesday movement. Stay tuned for a special matching opportunity to help support our work!
