This spring, I’m reminded how powerful access to excellent healthcare can be, and how lives are truly changed as a result.

As you read Cheryl and Felix’s story, I hope you’ll consider making a gift today to help more patients experience this same kind of care.

Cheryl came to NeighborHealth Center during a difficult season. After losing her job and employer-sponsored insurance, even basic care became out of reach. Though she had managed severe asthma for years, without consistent care, her condition quickly worsened, leading to repeated illnesses and emergency department visits.

Everything changed when a hospital social worker connected her to NeighborHealth Center.

During her first visit, Cheryl was still very ill and struggling to breathe. Our team quickly brought her to see Betsy Joyner, PA-C, who immediately got to work stabilizing her condition. With a new daily treatment plan, Cheryl’s breathing began to improve almost immediately.

But what made the biggest difference wasn’t simply receiving medical care; it was the relationship.

“From my first visit, Betsy put me at ease. I don’t open up easily, but she made me feel so comfortable that I could trust her,” Cheryl shared.

For the first time, Cheryl felt truly heard. Betsy took time to understand her full medical history, not only her asthma, but also her pre-diabetes, overall health, and lifestyle. Before long, Cheryl was feeling better than she had in years.

A few years later, Cheryl’s husband Felix began facing his own serious health challenges. Living with diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome, his health had declined to the point where he could no longer walk or drive. After being passed between specialists without relief, and facing long travel distances for care, he was losing hope.

With Cheryl’s encouragement, Felix came to NeighborHealth Center. Here, he found something different: a team that stayed with him.

Betsy worked closely with Felix to stabilize his condition, help him lose weight, and identify the root causes of his debilitating pain. She coordinated his care and connected him to the right specialists every step of the way.

Over time, something remarkable happened.

Felix walked again.

“Before coming to NeighborHealth, I hadn’t walked for a very long time,” he said. “When my sons and grandkids saw me walking for the first time in 10 years, they were so excited. I feel like I have my life back.”

Cheryl’s and Felix’s stories are powerful, but they are not alone.

There are many in our community just like them, individuals and families who lack access to consistent, high-quality primary care. Without it, small health issues become crises. But with comprehensive care, lives can be restored.

With your support, NeighborHealth Center will continue to meet this growing need.
